NIPT Test | How the Non-Invasive Prenatal Test Works

It’s a screening test offered during pregnancy to see if the fetus is at risk for having chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome (trisomy 21), trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) and trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome).
The test can also determine the sex of the fetus.
It also screens for differences in the usual number of sex chromosomes. The most common sex chromosome conditions are turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, triple x and XYY syndrome.

When should the NIPT test be done in pregnancy?

NIPT testing can be done as early as 10 weeks of pregnancy through delivery. There’s typically not enough fetal DNA in a pregnant person’s blood before 10 weeks of pregnancy.

There’s also the possibility that no test results are given due to insufficient fetal DNA in pregnant’s blood or difficulty identifying fetal DNA. In this case, she can repeat the NIPT test and hope for a result the second time.

If noninvasive prenatal testing indicates that the fetus is at risk for a chromosomal disorder, your provider may recommend diagnostic testing as:

Amniocentesis: This test can be performed after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS): This test can be performed between 10 and 13 weeks of pregnancy.

How Does the NIPT Test Work?

The NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Test) works by analyzing fragments of fetal DNA that circulate in the mother’s blood during pregnancy. Small pieces of genetic material pass from the fetus to the mother’s bloodstream, allowing the lab to separate and study this DNA for any chromosomal abnormalities. At Arab Medical Laboratories, this test is performed using advanced molecular techniques to ensure the highest accuracy and reliability.

  • Fetal DNA Analysis: Small fragments of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from the mother’s blood are extracted and analyzed to check the chromosomes responsible for the baby’s healthy growth.

  • Chromosome Comparison: The fetal chromosomes are compared with normal patterns to detect any missing or extra copies that may indicate genetic disorders.

  • Advanced Testing Techniques: At Arab Medical Laboratories, we use highly precise molecular analyzers powered by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology for fast and reliable results.

  • Safe and Noninvasive Procedure: Unlike traditional tests, NIPT doesn’t require amniotic fluid collection — only a simple blood draw from the mother.

  • Accurate and Early Results: Results are available within a few days, helping both the mother and medical team make early and informed decisions.

 Why Is NIPT Recommended?

NIPT is an essential preventive step during pregnancy, especially when there is a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities. It offers peace of mind by checking the baby’s health early without invasive procedures or discomfort.

  • Advanced Maternal Age: The risk of chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome increases after age 35, making NIPT highly recommended.

  • Family History of Genetic Disorders: If there’s a known history of genetic syndromes, early testing helps avoid complications later in pregnancy.

  • Abnormal Ultrasound Findings: When ultrasound results raise concerns, NIPT can help confirm or rule out potential chromosomal issues.

  • Early Reassurance: Even in normal pregnancies, NIPT provides peace of mind by confirming fetal health early.

  • Available at Arab Medical Laboratories: We provide NIPT testing under the supervision of genetic specialists, ensuring total confidentiality and high accuracy.

Difference Between NIPT and Other Tests

NIPT stands out as a completely noninvasive and safe alternative to invasive procedures such as amniocentesis. Its high accuracy reduces the need for risky diagnostic methods, making it the preferred choice for expectant mothers in early pregnancy.

  • Noninvasive Testing: No samples are taken from the uterus or placenta, avoiding risks such as miscarriage.

  • Higher Accuracy Than Ultrasound: While ultrasound relies on imaging, NIPT analyzes genetic material directly for more precise detection of chromosomal abnormalities.

  • Complementary to Other Tests: NIPT doesn’t replace regular checkups or ultrasounds but enhances them for a complete picture of the baby’s health.

  • Faster Results: NIPT results are usually ready within 5–7 working days, allowing doctors to take timely follow-up actions.

  • Available at Arab Medical Laboratories: We offer a full range of genetic testing services supervised by specialized professionals to ensure the highest standards of quality and precision.

Understanding NIPT Results

NIPT results do not confirm a condition but indicate the likelihood of a chromosomal abnormality in the fetus. If a high-risk result appears, additional diagnostic tests are recommended for confirmation. At Arab Medical Laboratories, results are interpreted by genetic experts to ensure clear and accurate communication with doctors and expectant mothers.

  • Low-Risk Result: Indicates a very low chance of chromosomal abnormalities  the fetus is likely healthy.

  • High-Risk Result: Suggests a potential chromosomal disorder but does not confirm it; further testing such as amniocentesis is advised.

  • Repeat Testing: Sometimes, the result may be inconclusive due to low fetal DNA levels; in such cases, retesting is recommended.

  • Expert Interpretation: At Arab Medical Laboratories, each report is reviewed by a specialist to clarify medical findings and risk levels.

  • Post-Test Follow-Up: Our team guides mothers through the next recommended steps in coordination with their doctor for comprehensive pregnancy care.
